Bangladesh cabinet ratifies nuke deal with Russia

The Bangladesh cabinet ratified a cooperation deal with the Russian Federation to set up a nuclear power plant at Rooppur in Pabna.

 

With financial and technological assistance from Russia, the nuclear power plant will be constructed to generate 2,000 mega-watts of electricity.

“Through ratification of the deal, the country took yet another step forward towards implementation of the nuclear power plant,” said Cabinet Secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan.

The cabinet meeting was held in the cabinet room with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. Ministers, advisers to the Prime Minister and state ministers and officials concerned were present.

The cabinet secretary said the modalities of duty, tax and fees have also been included in the agreement. Safety measures and protection of environment are also there in the agreement, he added.

Mosharraf Hossain said Russia has agreed to take back the spent fuel rods.
