Bangladesh, Russia further cooperation on nuclear power development

Two key Memorandums of Understanding were signed with Russia in developing nuclear power sector in Bangladesh.

The first Memorandum covers the development of human resources in nuclear power sector in Bangladesh, covering different tiers of managerial, technical and operational personnel, and eventually developing broad-based academic and training capabilities in Bangladesh.

The second Memorandum would pave way for establishing Information Centres in Bangladesh aimed at generating awareness among people, especially the younger generation, on various aspects of nuclear energy and nuclear power plants, including functioning, maintenance and safety measures in the nuclear plants.

Bangladesh State Minister for Science & Technology Yeafes Osman and Director General of Russian State Energy Corporation Sergey Kirienko signed the two MoUs in behalf of their countries.  

"The Information Centre, first to be set up in Dhaka shortly this year, would help us address perceptions or apprehensions, whatsoever, on nuclear energy and the two Plants that we are go to build in Rooppur in northern Bangladesh with Russian assistance," said Yeafesh Osman.

A high-level Russian delegation would be visiting Dhaka next week to undertake a detailed assessment of the structure, including syllabus, and facilities available in the Universities and other academic institutions in Bangladesh. Based on the assessment, the Russian side would engage with its Bangladesh counterparts and institutions to finalise plans for training and required capacity-building - towards realizing the provisions of the Memorandum.

Kirienko termed the signing of the Memorandums as "yet another affirmation of Bangladesh's keenness in initiating works on actual building of the Plants in Bangladesh in near future".
