Tripura bets on upcoming units to improve power situation in state
The power deficit state of Tripura has had to resort to frequent load shedding during peak hours. Forced shutdowns and retired units
have reduced the state's own power generation to about 100 MW from its installed capacity of 131 MW. State owned Tripura State Electricity
Corporation Limited (TSECL) is now betting on the upcoming units of the Rokhia gas based power plant, Pallatana power plant and Monarchak power
plant to bring some respite to the deteriorating power situation in the north eastern state.
8At present, Tripura is not getting its full allocation of power from the inter-state generating stations due to constraints in the
inter-state transmission lines, which could have otherwise been utilized for meeting the peak hour deficit in the state.
8TSECL has contended that after commissioning of the new units, the power supply position of the state will improve significantly.
8In this regard, Tripura Electricity Regulatory Commission (TERC) has opined that generating capacity is not a cost effective solution for
meeting the peak hour demand.
8A substantial investment would also be required for commissioning as well as operating and maintaining these plants, said the state
electricity regulator.
8The state commission has further stated that saving of energy and demand side management measures must also be pursued aggressively,
considering the growth in demand for electricity in the state.
