Kerala's 2000MW power plants lack gas for commissioning

Only 6.43 MMSCMD are allocated for Kerala's gas-based power plants against the total requirement of 13.65 MMSCMD.

The deficit of around 7.22 MMSCMD in the state that is keeping gas-based power plants with a total capacity of around 2000 MW from being commissioned.

The upcoming Plant Load Factor of Gas power projects in the State is only 34 per cent due to severe shortage of natural gas.

The plants now have an idle capacity of around 1600 MW.

In spite of sustained efforts by the Government and power utilities to meet the ever increasing power demand of about 255 Million Units, they could supply only 215 MU leaving deficit of around 40 MU due to continuous dry spell, severe short supply of fuel such as natural gas, coal and low Hydel reservoir levels put together forcing the power utilities to impose power restrictions under the inevitable circumstances.

Kerala Principal Secretary Dinesh Kumar has written a letter to APTRANSCO CMD Hiralal Samariya to review general power supply position and to issue instructions to the DISCOMs to ensure 7 hours power supply to the agricculture.
