Japan shuts thermal and hydro plants

J-Power has closed two thermal power plants due to a steam leak and a problem with a transformer.

These are the 1,050MW No 2 unit at the Tachibana-wan plant and the 250MW No 1 unit at its Takasago plant in western Japan.

The power generated from the two units is supplied to Kansai Electric Power, which is facing a power crisis due to the failure to restart several nuclear reactors.

The company plans to restart the unit at the Tachibana-wan plant in mid August, while the unit at the Takasago plant could take months to restart.

Aside form the two coal-fired plants, J-Power also suspended two hydro plants, a 92MW Taki unit in Fukushima prefecture, and a 17MW Kuromata No2 unit in Niigata prefecture due to heavy rain and floods.
