India suffers 6.6% power shortage

India suffered a 6.6 percent deficit in power supply during the first quarter of the current fiscal, according to Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.

 

'From 2008-09 to 2011-12, the energy shortages reduced from 11.1 percent to 6.6 percent and the peak shortage declined from 11.9 percent to 9.2 percent,' the minister stated.

He pointed out that the electricity demand in the period under review was at 227,657 million units, while the available power supply was 212,629 million units.

Shinde said that the Indian government was taking measures to add generation capacity in the power sector and that 37,971 million units were added till June 30 this year.
