India sign treaty with Ukraine on nuclear safety

India has signed an agreement with Ukraine on nuclear safety and radiation protection in a move to enhance the

safety of Indian nuclear plants.

The country hopes to take adavantage of Ukraine's expertise in the sector.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said during President Viktor Yanukovych's visit to India last week that

the 1986 Chernobyl disaster has given Ukraine "valuable insight and knowledge in dealing with this critical

issue".

"Through the agreement that has just been signed between the nuclear regulatory authorities of both sides, we

have agreed to share our experiences in nuclear safety and radiation protection," Singh added.

The total installed capacity of nuclear reactors in Ukraine is over 13GWe, with the country receiving most of

its nuclear fuel from Russia.

As part of the establishment of diplomatic ties, India and Ukraine also agreed to establish a comprehensive

bilateral partnership to promote trade, investment and cooperation in various fields.
