India gets 5.28 BUs of electricity from renewable sources

Tamil Nadu leads the charge.

India's hub for wind farms, Tami Nadu contributed 43% to the total renewable electricity generation of 5.28 billion units.

The state, which has been a leading producer of wind energy with an installed capacity of 7,111.68 MW, as on August 31,2012, generated of 2.14 BUs of electricity from renewable sources in August.

India's total wind energy generation accounted for 85%, or 4.51 BUs while solar energy contributed 83.84 million units. The cumulative generation from RES for the month of April-August 2012 stood at 23.56 BUs.

The southern region, at 3.40 BUs, generated more than half of the clean energy during the month.

Meanwhile, the western region followed second with an energy generation of 1.51 BUs during August. The key contributors have been the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, which generated 754.05 MUs, 656.8 MUs and 99.41 MUs, of electricity, respectively. Pertinently, Gujarat generated the highest amount of solar energy, at 59.36 MUs, during the month.

The northern region has not been able to contribute significantly to the power generation from renewable energy sources. The region could only generate 337.959 MUs of electricity from renewable sources during the period in question. Rajasthan, with its high wind energy potential, contributed 90% of the clean energy generation of north India.

Karnataka generated 218.594 MUs of energy from the small hydel projects in the state. This is two thirds of the total energy generated from small hydel sources.

Pertinently, the eastern region achieved all of its 28.74 MUs of clean energy from small hydel projects. Bihar contributed 10.508 MUs while the remaining 18.231 MUs was generated by state-run DVC.
