Maharashtra ends zero cross subsidy surcharge

The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission has ended the zero cross subsidy surcharge regime it introduced in 2006 for open access consumers.

The order has come on the back of a petition filed by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd  seeking a review of the erstwhile regime.

THis signals a re-birth of the state distribution companies which have been piling up losses for a quite a long time now.

Open access consumers shall now, according to the new order, have to pay more for accessing power through other means than what they have been allotted.

Only the consumers who are receiving supply from Tata Power through Reliance Infra wires shall be charged extra. However, no charge shall be levied on consumers drawing power through R-infra via R-infra wires.

The CCS ranges from Rs 0.21 per unit to Rs 3.97 per unit for high-tension (HT) consumers payable to MSEDCL, Rs 0.26 per unit to Rs 2.79 per unit payable to RInfra-D and Rs 2.58 per unit to Rs 2.81 per unit for TPC-D.
