India to bring back wind power investment scheme

India's generation based incentive scheme to encourage investments in the wind power sector is likely to be restored soon.

This was announced by Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association Chairman Ramesh Kymal after indication to this effect was expressed during a meeting that the members of Indian Wind Alliance had with senior officials of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in Delhi.

Under the GBI, wind power producers get 50 paise per unit of electricity fed into the grid, subject to a maximum of Rs.62 lakh per MW. The GBI is over and above the tariff fixed by the State Regulatory Commissions for purchase of electricity from wind power projects. The scheme would cease to exist if the total capacity under it came to 4,000 MW or by March 31, 2012, whichever was earlier.
