India surpasses generation targets in May

India surpassed its energy generation target for May 2011 by 3,065 million units, according to a report by the Central Electricity Authority.

The country generated 75,105 million MU during the month, while also registering an impressive double digit growth rate of 10.45% over the electricity generated in the corresponding month last year. The cumulative electricity generation during the period from April-May 2011 stands at 1,46,530.60 MU.

According to CEA, thermal power generation exhibited a growth rate of 7.42%, against the corresponding figure of May 2010. Furthermore, nuclear generation achieved a remarkable growth rate of 58.52%, mainly due to improved availability of nuclear fuel to various nuclear plants. Additionally, due to increased inflows, generation from hydro based plants recorded a growth rate of 20.18%.
Imports from Bhutan also exhibited a growth of 0.69%. With an import target of 291 MU, 294 MU was actually wheeled from Bhutan.

The cumulative electricity generation from the thermal, hydro and nuclear power sectors saw a growth of 6.46%, 54.65% and 12.66%, respectively, during the first two months of the ongoing fiscal, while imports from Bhutan fell short of their target of 457 MU, by 54.21 MU.
