Indonesia’s PLN enters agreement with Amazon for 210MW solar projects

Amazon committed to off-take the power from the four solar projects.

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN (Persero) signed an agreement with Amazon for the development of 210 megawatts (MW) of solar projects, the generated power of which will be purchased by the e-commerce company for its operations in Indonesia.

In a joint statement, the companies said the four solar projects under the agreement will be located in Bali and Java on the Java-Madura-Bali grid.

This is the first-of-its-kind deal for corporates to access additional utility-scale solar projects in Indonesia.

“Amazon’s commitment to be the off-taker is a key enabler for these projects, allowing PLN to introduce similar opportunities for other interested organizations, unlocking more corporate renewable energy procurement options in the country,” the statement read.

The agreement will also support Indonesia’s goal of having renewables account for 23% of its energy mix by 2025.

“The Indonesian government is committed to reducing greenhouse emissions to achieve net zero goals by 2060. PLN is fully committed to supporting the government’s program to enable clean energy and is accelerating this with a clear roadmap to achieve that mission. This collaboration between the private and public sectors is a key strategy to ensuring a future of clean and affordable energy,” said PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo.

Amazon aims to reach net-zero carbon in its business by 2040 and to power its operations with fully renewable energy by 2025.
