China Power to build hydropower projects in Indonesia

Plans to invest US$17 billion on a series of hydropower plants.

Chinese state-owned utility firm China Power Investment is outlining plans to invest in hydropower plant projects located in North Kalimantan.

One of these projects, a 7,000MW hydropower station, will be built along the Kayan River. Groundbreaking for this project and others are expected to commence by 2014.

The plants will help meet Indonesia’s surging electricity needs, estimated to jump 10% annually in view of the 6.5% economic growth predicted for this year.
