
Barc sets up world's largest nuclear desalination plant
The nuclear power complex at Kalpakkam will soon have a nuclear desalination plant, now being built by the Desalination Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, at Rs.40-crore.
It be the world's largest sea water hybrid desalination plant to be coupled to a nuclear power station. It will produce 63 lakh litres of potable water a day using a thermal method and a reverse osmosis system. While the thermal method will produce 45 lakh litres of drinking water a day, the reverse osmosis system will produce 18 lakh litres.
Energy Securities and Climate Change', Dr. R Chidambaram, maintained, that, in order to satisfy energy demands and to mitigate the threat of climate change – two of the 21st century’s greatest challenges for all countries – nuclear energy offered major opportunities.
