Amazon to develop 198 MW wind farm in India

The company’s renewable capacity in India exceeds 1.1 gigawatts.

Amazon will now have 50 wind and solar projects in India as it will develop a new 198-megawatt (MW) wind farm in Osmanabad, Maharashtra.

In a statement, Amazon said its wind and solar projects in the country generated around $349m in economic investments between 2014 and 2022 and contributed around $87m to the country’s economy.

Amazon’s projects also provided over 20,600 local full-time job opportunities in 2022 only.

Abhinav Singh, vice president of Operations at Amazon India, said its renewable projects in the country will boost the company’s goal to power its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025.

“Rapidly scaling renewable energy is one of the most effective strategies to address climate change, and these efforts can be especially impactful in India, where the country’s leaders are focused on transitioning the country away from fossil fuels,” Singh said.

Amazon said once operational, all 50 projects can generate electricity that could power 1.1 million homes in New Delhi annually, and provide power to the company’s data centres, logistics facilities, physical stores, and corporate offices.
