Akaysha’s Waratah Super Battery completes first stage of energisation
The facility has also been registered in the national electricity market (NEM).
Akaysha Energy has successfully energised the Waratah substation at 330 kilovolts, marking the first major milestone in the completion of the 850-megawatt Waratah Super Battery project for EnergyCo.
In a statement, Akaysha said this development, which was facilitated from Transgrid’s Munmorah Substation, gives way for commissioning works to commence on the project. This also marks a step towards commercial operations and delivering the system integrity protection scheme service to the New South Wales electrical network, it added.
“This massive milestone is a testament to teamwork and sign of the evolving connection landscape in the NEM,” said Nick Finch, chief engineer at Akaysha.
The Waratah Super Battery project aims to enhance grid reliability in NSW whilst building one of the world’s largest battery energy storage systems to stabilise the grid during the state’s transition from coal-fired power.
This battery project is expected to be fully operational by mid-2025.
