First wind-power plant opens

Vietnam Recyclable Energy Joint-Stock Company (REVN) started operation of the first 20 turbines of a wind power plant in Binh Thanh Commune, Tuy Phong District, Binh Thuan Province at 3pm on April 18th, according to the Provincial Trade and Industry Department.

Deputy-Director of the Department, Ho Son Hung said this was the first wind power project in the country to be connected to the national grid.

According to REVN, after the first phase of the wind power project that costs some US$70million and can generate some 90 mW/h had finished and successfully conducted pilot operation, the Company officially operated the 20 turbines and connected it to the national grid.

It also affirmed that the second phase of the project would immediately implement and when the second phase finishes, the plant will generate another 90 mW/h.

According to Mr. Hung, there are 16 wind power projects in Binh Thuan with aggregate capacity of 1,350 mW.

Meanwhile, the Energy Office under the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Province has just handed to the Ministry the master plan on wind power development in the period of 2010-2015 with the vision toward 2020 and the Province’s total wind power capacity for 2020 will mount to more than 5,000 mW.
