SEA's biggest solar power plant to be built in Malaysia

It will be called the Sultan Ibrahim Solar Park.

HM Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar has revealed plans to transform Johor into a “major producer of environmentally friendly energy” by opening a solar power plant at Pengerang.

With a combined installed capacity of 450 MW, the RM1.4b (US$0.35b) project is expected to be Southeast Asia’s biggest solar energy storage system once fully commissioned by 2023. And it will be named Sultan Ibrahim Solar Park.

In a Facebook post, Sultan Ibrahim announced the officiation of the “ground-breaking ceremony” at the project site in Pengerang on 23 March.

“With this exciting project, Johor will make a quantum leap into the world of renewable and sustainable clean energy,” Sultan Ibrahim said, noting that the project would be Johor’s first major foray into large-scale sustainable energy.

“Johor is one of the states blessed with high sun hours. It is time that we tapped into this resource to boost our power generating capacity and contribute to the production of renewable energy,” he added.

The project will be creating jobs for the locals, and it is also in line with the 2030 Johor Sustainable Development Plan
