JERA, Uniper partner to procure LNG, clean ammonia

This is to improve stability of energy supply in Japan and Germany.

JERA Co., through its subsidiary JERA Americas Inc., and Uniper Global Commodities S.E. and Uniper Global Commodities North America (Uniper) have partnered to procure LNG and Clean Ammonia from the US. 

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) is intended to improve the stability of energy supply in Japan and Germany. 

The companies are also looking to jointly optimise their respective LNG portfolios for supply their respective markets.

Moreover, under the MoU, JERA and Uniper will be facilitating large-scale production project for clean ammonia in line with decarbonisation goals across the globe. 

“JERA, with its partner ConocoPhillips, are considering development of projects on the US Gulf Coast to produce hydrogen and convert it into clean ammonia to be supplied to JERA and Uniper, with the aim of increasing ammonia supply for use in Europe, and in the future, in Japan, and greater Asia,” the company said in a statement.

It will also contribute solutions through LNG procurement to energy security issues in short- and medium-term.
