Small hydro plants to boost Sri Lankan grid
Sri Lanka will utilize small hydropower plant projects to add 350MW of electricity to the national grid by 2020.
The small hydro projects could only meet 6.8 per cent of Sri Lanka's electricity requirement, according to the Asian Tribune.
Recently, such projects added 175MW according to the
Small Hydro Power Developers Association president Anil Makalanda.
The number of small hydro power projects in the country had increased from two in 1996 to 90 to date, while 84 more projects will become operational in the coming years.
The country's present power capacity is estimated at 2,000MW and is expected to reach up to 7,000MW in 2030.
