NHPC generation capacity up to 5,322 MW by 2012

NHPC will increase its capacity to 5,322 MW by 2012 through 10 projects  with a cumulative power generation capacity of 4,502 MW.

National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Chairman-cum-Managing Director S K Garg said that the company would complete this project under the 11th 5-Year Plan by the end of March 2012. He said that Rs21,600 would be needed for the project, according to the Indian Public Sector News.

Under these projects, a 231 MW Stage III project will be launched on the Ravi River, which is expected to be completed by June next year. This project will cost Rs1,405 crore and will generate 1,108.17 million units of electricity every year.

According to Garg, during 2009-10, the NHPC has produced 16,960 million units of electricity and the net profit of the company has increased from Rs 510 crore in 2002-03 to Rs 2,090 crore in 2009-10.

Under its 11th 5- Year Plan, the NHPC has commissioned 3 projects - Teesta-V, Sewa-II and Omkareshwar - in Sikkim, Jammu and Kashmir and Madhya Pradesh with a total capacity of 510, 120 and 520 MW.The company's nine more projects of the 5-Year Plan are under construction in Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal.
