India logs highest peak demand amidst heatwave

Measures have been implemented to ensure enough power supply.

India’s Ministry of Power said its northern region recorded the highest peak demand of 89 gigawatts on 17 June amidst increased energy consumption due to the ongoing heatwave.

“This achievement was made possible by importing 25% to 30% of the region's power requirement from neighbouring regions,” authorities said in a statement.

All utilities have been advised to maintain a high state of alert and minimise forced outages of equipment, the ministry said

Citing the IMD forecast, the ministry said heat wave conditions in North-West India are expected to abate from 20 June.

The government said actions have been implemented to ensure an adequate energy supply amidst the increased demand. These include tapping imported coal-based plants operation and gas-based power plants, conducting maintenance scheduling, coal stock maintenance, and inter-state power tying, among others.
