Incheon City, Ørsted to develop offshore wind power industry

Ørsted is developing a 1.6 GW wind project off the coast of Incheon.

South Korea’s Incheon City and developer Ørsted signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to boost the offshore wind industry in the region, anchored on Ørsted’s 1.6-gigawatt offshore wind projects in the Incheon region.

In a statement, Ørsted said it will develop projects that will benefit residents, businesses and suppliers in the region as part of the partnership.

Incheon City, meanwhile, will provide administrative support such as enhancing local awareness and understanding and implementing policies and infrastructure for offshore wind.

“Offshore wind is a powerful means of achieving decarbonisation and a new industry that can grow sustainably. I expect that today's agreement with Ørsted will help revitalise our local economy, boost the supply chain, and become a great opportunity for the growth of offshore wind power projects that benefit the region and the growth of our local industry,” said Incheon Metropolitan City Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok.

Ørsted received exclusive development rights for the 1.6 GW project located 70 kilometres off the coast of Incheon and is expected to be completed in the early 2030s.

Set to be the largest offshore project in Korea upon completion, it is expected to generate power which can meet the needs of over one million households and reduce carbon emissions by around four million tonnes annually.
