Singapore to launch programme to reduce power consumption in households

The Residential Demand Response will be piloted by the second half of 2024.

The Energy Market Authority and SP Group will launch the Residential Demand Response (R-DR) programme by the second half of 2024, a scheme that will help households with smart metres reduce theory power consumption during demand peaks.

In a statement, EMA said reducing consumption during peak demand periods will help the power system run smoothly and more efficiently by augmenting the supply of electricity using resources from the demand side.

Singapore’s peak demand is expected to register up to a 6.5% compound annual growth rate over the next five years.

Smart metres will help monitor electricity consumption and will make electricity management easier.

“The demand response pilot helps to involve households in lowering electricity demand during peak periods. This can help create a more sustainable and efficient energy ecosystem for everyone,” EMA CEO Ngiam Shih Chun said.

Tan See Leng, Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, said at the Singapore International Energy Week that the solution will “future-proof” Singapore’s power grid for the energy transition.

Participating households will receive notifications through the SP mobile application to reduce or defer their electricity consumption temporarily. They will also gain financial incentives from the programme.

SP Grid has installed over 834,000 smart electricity metres across residential and non-residential premises as of September 2023.
