NTPC, Chempolis India ink MOU to study bamboo-based bio-refinery development

The bio-coal produced will replace the coal in the NTPC Bongaigaon Power Plant.

NTPC entered a memorandum of understanding with Chempolis India to look into the feasibility of developing a bamboo-based bio-refinery in Bongaigaon in Assam which will support the power generation firm’s decarbonisation efforts.

In a statement, the Ministry of Power said the project will study the use of bamboo to produce 2G Ethanol, bio-coal for thermal power plants and other value-added products.

The planned bio-refinery is targeted to be integrated with the NTPC Bongaigaon Power Plant.

All the utility requirements such as steam and power will be sourced from the power plant. Meanwhile, the bio-coal to be produced by the bio-refinery will partly replace the coal in the power plant, converting 5% of the generated power to green, the ministry said.
