Petronas launches renewable energy firm Gentari

Gentari plans to build 30GW - 40GW of RE capacity by 2030.

Malaysia’s Petronas announced the launch of the independent entity Gentari Sdn. Bhd. that will provide renewable-energy solutions that would help accelerate the adoption and commercialisation of clean energy.

In a statement, Gentari said that by 2030, it plans to build a renewable energy capacity of 30 gigawatts (GW) to 40GW, specifically in solar and with added opportunities in wind and battery storage.

It will also supply up to 1.2 metric tonnes per annum of hydrogen by relying on competencies in developing large projects to achieve scale as a low carbon hydrogen producer beginning in Malaysia.

Gentari plans to become a preferred green mobility solutions provider, supporting the electric vehicle ecosystem by capturing a 10% market share of around 25,000 chagrin points based on current estimates in key markets in the Asia Pacific, anchoring in Malaysia and India.

"Gentari will offer cleaner energy solutions to meet the energy needs and lower carbon aspirations of Malaysia and its customers at home and abroad,” Gentari Chairman Datuk Tengku Muhammad Taufik.

“With a dedicated team focusing on the supply, distribution, and retail of cleaner energy, we aim to capture opportunities in the low carbon energy space by providing affordable and accessible solutions and systems by enabling scale of production and infrastructure availability," he added.

The new company will be given independence to focus on innovating and delivering clean energy solutions and seeking financing opportunities for business growth.

Currently, Gentari has over one gigawatt-peak of solar capacity in India and Malaysia, a pipeline of clean hydrogen projects being developed in Malaysia and other prioritised markets with its partners, with the first project targeted to come onstream in 2025.

It also has over 220 electric vehicles under the vehicle-as-a-service model and a network of some 170 charge points in India and Malaysia.
