Wärtsilä 40-MW LNG power plant to boost EPZ in Adamjee, Bangladesh

The plant will encourage export growth and job creation in the zone.

Wärtsilä Energy is set to supply a 40-megawatt (MW) power plant located in Adamjee Export Processing Zone (EPZ) near Dhaka, Bangladesh.

According to Wärtsilä’s press release, this power plant, ordered by Sigma Powertech Ltd., will operate with four Wärtsilä 34SG engines operating on natural gas fuel. It will provide a reliable and efficient electricity supply to the EPZ, which can be expected to encourage industrial investments in the zone. In turn, it will create employment and future growth for the area.

Sigma Powertech Ltd. Chairman Mohammad Moyeen said, “This is an important project for the region and for the continued economic growth of Bangladesh through export enhancement as per the government's initiative. Growth throughout the industrial sector is very much dependent on having a reliable power supply, and the new power plant will provide this. Wärtsilä has an excellent reputation in this country with a strong presence to provide the support needed.”

Also stated in the press release, the delivery of the engines is being made on a fast-track basis with all equipment scheduled to be delivered before the end of 2021. Commissioning and commencement of operations is expected before the end of June 2022.

Further, Wärtsilä Energy Business Director for South Asia, Henri Boxtel said, “Projects like the Adamjee EPZ project represent a new kind of industrial development concept for Bangladesh and we expect more of those to come. Typically, these developments require the power generation to be flexible, efficient, and reliable, and our technology fits these needs perfectly.”

This will be the fourth Bangladeshi EPZ project for which Wärtsilä has supplied power generating capacity. Wärtsilä currently has 5,000 MW of installed capacity in Bangladesh with over 200 company personnel employed, the press release states.
