UAE to improve energy efficiency by 40% in 2050

It launched a programme that will tackle energy, water, and consumption rationalisation.

The Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei has launched the National Water and Energy Demand Management Programme.

The programme aims to improve the energy efficiency of the three most energy-intensive sectors in the country, namely transport, industry, and construction, by 40% in 2050, the Emirates News Agency reported.

Through the program, several initiatives will be launched, such as cutting energy demand by 40%, raising the share of renewables in the energy mix to 50%, and boosting water reuse by 95%. The programme combines all stakeholders in the UAE to realise the objectives of the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and UAE Water Security Strategy 2036.

During the launching ceremony, Al Mazrouei stated that “we have started the journey of shaping the future and managing demand for energy and water, as we aim to raise the performance of both sectors, and promote collaborations between local and federal authorities and the private sector to find advanced solutions for reducing energy and water consumption in target sectors, through launching a national rationalisation campaign.”

On the other hand, in the emirate of Dubai, Dubai Demand Side Management Strategy 2030 aims to cut the demand for electricity and water by 30% by 2030, while the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy aims to produce 75% of its energy requirements from clean sources by 2050. The Abu Dhabi Demand Side Management and Energy Rationalisation Strategy 2030 aims to cut electricity consumption by 22% and water consumption by 32% by 2030, Enerdata reports.
