EVN says supply is enough to satisfy demand, cuts electricity regularly

The Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), the only electricity retailer in Vietnam, has assured the public that the

electricity supply would be able to satisfy the demand this year. However, the power cuts still have been

occurring regularly in big cities.

Enterprises and urban dwellers sighed with relief when hearing the EVN’s statement that it would see to the

adequate supply of power to them this summer, though the EVN said the electricity supply would be profuse

because a lot of businesses have shut down or scaled down the production and do not need electricity.

However, the commitment by EVN has not been followed. Electricity has been cut regularly in big cities of Hanoi

and HCM City.

Supply profuse enough to satisfy demand…

EVN predicted that in June, the hottest month in summer, the additional charge may reach 348 million kwh per

day, while the highest possible capacity would be between 18,400 and 18,700 MW.

The predicted levels were not much higher than the actual power supply in May. The total electricity output was

10.603 billion kwh, while the average electricity output was 342.04 million kwh per day.

Therefore, EVN has assured the public that the supply would be able to satisfy the demand, if no unexpected

thing occurs.

The HCM City EVN Corporation has also announced that the supply would be enough for production activities and

household consumption from now to the end of the year. The statistics showed that the consumed electricity

volume in the city has been lower than previously forecasted, partially because the city’s local authorities

ask to practice thrift.

However, the main reason behind the low consumed electricity volume was the low consumption level from

manufacturing enterprises. Due to the sharp fall in the purchasing power, enterprises have to scale down

production, thus leading to the lower capacity consumption in comparison with the previous years.

EVN SPC’s managers, in the meeting with the press on June 19, once again affirmed that the southern provinces

will not lack electricity from now to the end of the year. However, they have warned that the serious

electricity shortage may occur in 2013-2015 due to the short supply.

… but electricity still has been cut regularly

The first spell of electricity cut occurred in Hanoi when the city received a violent heat wave of the summer.

On June 12 and 13, there was no power in many areas of the city, which was explained by the troubles with the

110KV transmission line.

The regular cuts have been explained by the sharp increase in the consumed electricity volume on hot days.

Meanwhile, people complained that they could not contact the power companies when the power was cut. In some

regions, when the electricity was cut in the midnight, people had to come to local electricity supply branches

to pressure the managers and force them to resume the electricity supply.

Nguyen Anh Vu, a senior official of EVN HCM City, said that sometimes the electricity is cut on schedule in

order to serve the maintenance works. Besides, the overloading at some moments also led to the electricity cut

for short time.

While Vu has blamed the electricity cuts on the sharp demand at some certain moments, the Quang Binh provincial

power company has been worried because the power volume consumed by the enterprises in the locality has dropped

dramatically.

The businesses in Quang Binh province received a dispatch from the Bo Trach power company branch, inviting them

to the branch’s headquarter to discuss about how to use electricity in the most effective way.

Here the businesses were told that the monthly electricity volume was much lower than the designed capacity and

transformer’s nominal output, which has led to a big loss of electricity on the transmission line. The

enterprises were asked to commit to increase the power to be consumed

Meanwhile, just two years ago, the enterprises were persuaded to lessen the power consumption to ease the power

shortage.
