PETRONAS, JERA to embark on low-carbon energy initiatives

These include LNG, ammonia, and hydrogen.

Malaysia-based oil and gas company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Japan-based power generation giant JERA signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on low-carbon energy initiatives, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), ammonia, and hydrogen.

Under the MoU, both companies will boost collaboration in supply chains for ammonia and hydrogen fuels whilst advocating for LNG use.

“PETRONAS is already producing blue hydrogen as a by-product from its facilities and will be exploring the commercial production of green hydrogen in the near future,” the company said in a statement.

In terms of LNG, PETRONAS and JERA will be pursuing the use of natural gas as a cleaner marine fuel via LNG bunkering solutions. Pursuant of the MoU, both parties will explore the establishment of a global bunkering supply network.

PETRONAS also completed its maiden LNG bunkering operation at Pasir Gudang, Malaysia in November 2020, whilst JERA completed its first LNG bunkering operation in Japan in October 2020.

The collaboration was virtually formalised by Adnan Zainal Abidin, executive vice-president for gas and new energy at PETRONAS, and Yukio Kani, corporate vice-president and chief operating officer, business development department at JERA.
