India’s clean power surpasses 100GW

It rises to 146 GW, if large hydro is included.

India's total installed renewable energy generation capacity hits the 100-gigawatt (GW) mark. In a tweet, India’s Minister of Power, New and Renewable Energy, Raj Kumar Singh said, “Another landmark day in the history of the Indian Power Sector. Our installed Renewable Energy capacity (excluding large Hydro) has crossed 1,000,000 Megawatts. Under the visionary leadership of [Prime Minister Narendra Modi] we shall continue to be global leaders in Energy Transition." 

According to Renews Biz, the ministry added that a further 50 GW is being built and 27 GW under tendering. It added that, if large hydro is included, installed renewable energy capacity is 146 GW. The country has set a target of 450 GW of green energy by 2030.

Despite India’s per capita emission being one-third of the world average, the country has been building up its green portfolio. India is on track to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions targets for electricity generation from non-fossil fuel sources and emission reductions, stated a report from livemint. 

India stands at fourth position in the world in terms of installed renewable power capacity, fifth in solar and fourth in wind, according to the ministry.
